There is a very special sort of tenderness between Steven and little Micah. Micah is a gentle-spirited, curious young man who totally adores his dad – getting very excited when he catches a glimpse of him from inside the Atelier. Steven favours a table in the Commons, where friendly hellos are exchanged and he’s within earshot of the Atelier. Steven works in the exciting new field of wearables for health and the accompanying integrated technology through Coogeki Health and also works with 10maker, a software and mobile application development house focused on business process productivity. Meet the Choong boys – both vibrant members of our community, and full of the easygoing Penang spirit!
How did you hear of Trehaus?
I came across a write-up on ChannelNewsAsia about Trehaus before my son (Micah) was born. It looked interesting, but I didn’t pay close attention to it until my wife and I started to discuss the different options that would allow Micah to interact with others in a social environment. Trehaus was an attractive choice as I could remain involved in Micah’s life while working in a conducive space.
Was working from home an option? Why did you choose to work in Trehaus?
I find it challenging to focus when I have to juggle between taking care of Micah and working at home. I ended up doing my work late at night, which is not beneficial for my health. Choosing to work in Trehaus allows me to concentrate on my work while knowing that Micah is in good hands of the team. The best part is that I still get to spend time with him.
It also allows Micah to interact with other kids and it has proven to be helpful in developing his social skills. He is definitely more comfortable in interacting with others after going to Trehaus for about 4-5 months!
How has your experience at Trehaus been so far?
I am thankful to come across Trehaus and the team has been excellent in taking care and engaging Micah. The attentiveness that the team shows to the different little ones amazes me. I am also picking up different parenting skills from the team and the parents there. The working environment is great and allows me to have meetings with my clients in the same space.
Why do you value being an involved father?
The joy of seeing Micah growing day by day is priceless. I am humbled by the parenting experience and constantly amazed by his acquisition of various skills over time, including learning to turn over, to crawl and to walk by 1 year old!
What’s your typical day like coming to work with Micah?
Micah usually wakes up at 7 am where he gets to spend time with my wife before she goes to work. Usually, we will leave for Trehaus in the afternoon after Micah’s morning nap and I will feed him lunch first thing after we have arrived there. After his lunch, Micah will play at the Kids Atelier while I start on my work. We usually make our way home around 5 pm after a meaningful day in Trehaus.
Have you seen any changes in Micah over the past few months, in terms of his growth and development?
Big Change! When we first brought Micah to Trehaus, he was very shy and required someone to sit beside him at all times. Micah is a reserved boy. He likes to sit quietly, observe the surroundings and see how the different kids are playing. As he grew older, he started to learn how to crawl but he still required company. After 2 months of settling into Trehaus, I was surprised to see him moving around the space. Nowadays, when Micah is in the Kids Atelier, we can no longer contain him! He is just everywhere.
Has being in this space as a coworker done anything for your business / work / career?
What do you enjoy most about being in this space?
It is nice to be able to interact with different people and exchange ideas with them.
Being able to work near to Micah, and still be part of his life throughout the day.
Any words of advice for a dad like you who would like to bring their kids to work?
Do not miss out the chance to see your own baby grow up because once this season has passed, you will never be able to revisit it. Trehaus allows me to achieve both my career growth and be a large part of Micah’s growth and development, and I am grateful for it.
